Gemma Johnson, Natural Body, Acrylic and found objects on canvas, 16"x20"

After going through childbirth, my body changed. It took me a long time to feel comfortable with my new identity. Through my piece, I express what a natural postpartum body looks like. Because of the controversy surrounding women’s bodies, especially postpartum, this piece shows the hard reality many women face today in an attempt to normalize the female, postpartum body.
I am a mixed media artist at Montclair State University. I am a Visual Arts major, minoring in Psychology. I hope to be accepted into a Masters program to gain my Masters in Counseling with a specialization in Art Therapy. Through art therapy, people can communicate their experiences and emotions of trauma to help cope and heal. My work is primarily based on my own personal experiences such as motherhood or my fears.
